Orientation: Please meet Dr. Sellers in the UAB Highlands Pain Clinic Conference room at 6:30 AM, Monday 4/22/19 for a brief orientation and to get any upfront questions answered. UAB Highlands is located at 1201 11th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35205. It is located on the 3rd floor next to the Emergency Room at UAB Highlands. Go to the pain clinic lobby front desk, identify yourself as a medical student meeting Dr. Sellers for the Special Topics course and they will notify her or take you to the back clinic conference room to meet her.
Attire: Please wear clean scrubs with your medical student ID badge clearly visible. Your white coat can be added for Pain Clinic exposure.
Pediatriac CV: Dr. Brad Steenwyk. Please meet him at the 5th floor Women and Infant Center (WIC). Anesthesia Office 5210. Identify yourself as a medical student that will be shadowing Dr. Steenwyk for the Special Topics course. Ask Jennifer at the desk to page Dr. Steenwyk. He will come to you so you can easily get through the secure doors at Childrens.)
General Anesthesia/ Critical Care: Dr. Andrew Barker. Plan to meet him in the North Pavilion at the anesthesiology board with all the computer monitors. Identify yourself as a student that will be shadowing him for the special topics course and ask the coordinator or someone at the board to page him for you so he knows you are waiting for him at the board.
OB Anesthesia: There is a different attending for each day. Their names are listed on the schedule. Most of the action will be in shadowing the residents. If you have questions before you can page an OB resident through UAB Paging Operator 934-3411. The OB anesthesia fellow, Sara Ann Lester, and residents (Clay Parker and Katie Talbot) know that you are coming and will expect you for morning lecture. It is held in the WIC 3rd floor Labor and Delivery unit. You can let the front MEU desk know that you are there to work with the OB anesthesia team. They will let you go back. If you go to the main Labor and Delivery desk, they can show you where the OB anesthesia resident desk is located. There is lecture every morning except Tuesday (for CQI) at 6:30 AM at the desk.
Morning Clinical Conference: You are expected to attend the morning clinical conference on the mornings that you are in the North Pavilion OR. It is held in the UAB Department of Anesthesiology NP-5401 Conference Room from 0600-0630 AM. See the morning report calendar for topic details. Core Didactics – Keywords – Mini Mock Orals – Board Review – Echo – TEE – Trauma. You are also expected to attend the CQI on Tuesday morning from 0630 – 0730. It is held in Jefferson Tower 906.
General Anesthesia/ Trauma: Dr. Bert Pierce. You will shadow him from 12 PM-3 PM. Monday, 4/22/19 will be Michaella Scopel in the UAB Highlands OR. Thursday and Friday will be in the North Pavilion OR. Thursday, 4/25/19 will be Alan Hsu and John Ahn. Friday, 4/26/19 will be Amy Schmitt and Lena Zhang.
General Anesthesia/ Regional Anesthesia: Dr. Will Potter. Plan to meet him in the North Pavilion at the anesthesiology board. Identify yourself as a student that will be shadowing him for the special topics course and ask the coordinator or someone at the board to page him for you so he knows you are waiting for him at the board. Friday, 4/26/19, Dr. Potter is at UAB Highlands OR. UAB Highlands is located at 1201 11th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35205. You should enter in the main front entrance and go to the second floor, surgery waiting area. You can go to the information desk and ask them to page him for you so he will know that you are waiting for him at the desk. Your badge may allow you to get to the same day surgery preop area. You can also go to that desk and ask the secretary to page him for you.
General Anesthesia/ Pain Medicine: Dr. Brooke Bell will be at UAB Highlands (1201 11th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35205). Dr. Bell will be in the Highlands OR on Monday 4/22/19 (Michaella Scopel) and Tuesday, 4/23/19 (John Ahn). You should enter in the main front entrance and go to the second floor, surgery waiting area. You can go to the information desk, identify yourself as a medical student shadowing her, and ask them to page her for you so she will know that you are waiting for her at the desk. Your badge may allow you to get to the same day surgery preop area. You can also go to that desk and ask the secretary to page her for you. Dr. Bell will be on the Inpatient Pain Service on Thursday, 4/25/19 (Alan Hsu). Plan to meet her in the North Pavilion 7th floor PACU where IPS will be doing procedures. Or at the anesthesiology board with all the computer monitors. Identify yourself as a student that will be shadowing her for the special topics course and ask the coordinator or someone at the board to page her for you so she knows you are waiting for her at the board. Dr. Bell will be in the Pain Clinic on Wednesday, 4/24/19 (Lena Zhang) and Friday, 4/26/19 (Amy Schmitt). It is located on the 3rd floor next to the Emergency Room at UAB Highlands. Go to the pain clinic lobby front desk, identify yourself as a medical student shadowing Dr. Bell and they will notify her or take you to the back clinic to meet her.
