Pole Top: Gilgamesh with Two Animals

Pole Top: Gilgamesh with Two Animals 800-600 BCE

This bronze figurine, usually described as a standard finial, consists of a composite human figure and animals. The upper part of the figure holds two mythological animals of lion-monster form in the "master of animals" position. The lower half of the figure includes a repeated human head flanked by the heads of cocks, which form the tails of the upper animals. The entire image is supported by a form resembling animal legs, which in turn rests upon a tripod-like structure with lugs. The work is solid cast in one piece.

Rhyton: The Buffalo-Slayer Goddess

Rhyton: The Buffalo-Slayer Goddess 600-700 CE

Because the woman's widely set, heavy-lidded eyes suggest Indian facial types, she may well represent a Sasanian goddess who was associated with the cult of the Indian god Siva. Known in India as Durga, Siva's wife, and in Iran as Nana, she decapitateda demon who appeared in buffalo form. Both this and the horse rhyton were found crushed flat in tombs. Their reconstruction took many months to complete.

ceramic bowl Iran 10th century

"Whoever talks a lot, slips a lot." Ceramic Bowl Iran 10th century

The ninth and tenth centuries in eastern Iran and nearby Central Asia gave birth to a remarkable series of pottery decorative types involving fundamental innovations and extraordinarily high development in the technique of underglaze slip painting. This example presents the combination of features typical of the finer black-on-white wares: exquisite design, fine calligraphy, pure white engobe, and colorless glaze, all adding up to a striking effect. The inscription admonishes: "Whoever talks a lot, slips a lot."
