Linking to Library Resources in Your Course Shell

"Affordable Instructional Materials" Research Guide

For faculty teaching online courses, please be sure to use links to guide students to their readings rather than attaching pdfs.  This will help you ensure that you are following licensing agreements with library vendors.  If you need to link media, books, or articles, please see this new research guide that walks you through the steps.  Access the "Affordable Instructional Materials" guide here: https://guides.library.uab.edu/support. This guide also provides numerous teaching resources that offer open access books, textbooks, and other educational materials available.

Creating Direct Links (PURLs) to Library Resources

In order for users to access many of the library's resources, it is necessary to create a persistent link (PURL (persistent URL)) that will identify a user as being affiliated with UAB.

A PURL allows you to directly link someone to a subscription based resource like a journal article or online book on or off campus by using our proxy server snippet (http://uab.idm.oclc.org/login?url=). The snippet will authenticate UAB faculty, staff, students so they can access the resource remotely.

Welcome to the Lister Hill Library liaison page for the School of Optometry. As your liaison, I am here to make sure that you are getting the help you need with library resources, databases, searches, and training and instruction.

The objectives of the liaison program are:

  • to get information to faculty and staff
  • to give us a better understanding of faculty and staff needs to support teaching, research and clinical care
  • to provide a more personalized level of service
  • to increase the visibility of the library’s resources and services across campus

The services liaisons provide include:

  • library instruction for faculty and students including classroom sessions and one-on-one consultations
  • research assistance
  • assistance accessing and using library resources and services
  • collection development advocacy
  • AND much more!

Keeping Up with the Research Literature

Browsing the Table of Contents (TOCs) of Important Journals

  • Many journals provide email alerts of new issues with links to content the library licenses.
    • Use a search engine to find the journal's website.  Look for a link such as "Alert services."
    • Often the links to articles work on campus only, so  copy the article title into PubMed or Google Scholar from the LHL homepage to access the full text article.
  • Download the BrowZine app to scan TOCs and read the PDFs on your tablet or smartphone. (NEW from UAB Libraries web version coming summer, 2015)
  • Highwire Press allows both TOC alerts and literature search updates.  Learn more.

Citation Alerts:  See who is citing your work

Literature search updates: Have a specific search run at regular intervals with the results emailed to you

  • Most library databases offer this feature for those who set up a personal account.
  • Set up autoalerts:
