Digital Preservation

This guide is meant to be an introduction to the practice of digital preservation. Use it to learn about the topic and how to ensure long term access to your own data.

Digital Preservation at UAB Libraries

Digital Preservation initiatives at UAB Libraries are performed by the Digitization and Digital Preservation (DnD) department. Our focus is on developing high-quality, standards-compliant digitization, digital preservation, description, curation, and access services for UAB Libraries' digital and digitized collections. We also partner with schools and departments across UAB and hope to soon expand to working with community partners in the greater Birmingham area.

Recent Major Projects

  • In collaboration with the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library, our department is digitizing and storing digital copies for preservation of rare medical texts that illuminate the history of medical practices dating back to the 14th century. This project will increase access to the materials by providing a digital copy online and ensure the materials will be accessible digitally in the long term through preservation. Some of these texts can currently be accessed online at the Turning the Pages site or RFHL's Digital Collections page.
