UAB Libraries 3D Printing

Information on 3D printing and related resources available from the UAB Libraries

UAB Libraries 3D Printing

The 3D printing equipment in the UAB Libraries is provided as a campuswide resource to enable the UAB Community to investigate the uses of this technology for novel approaches to teaching and research. The UAB Libraries also support the exploration of this technology for creative arts or other personal, non-commercial projects. Printing priorities will be given to those projects that inform teaching and research programs within UAB.

We are a resource rather than a service. We are happy to assist you with preparing and printing your items. However, UAB Library staff will not:

  • Print items for you.
  • Convert files from other formats.
  • Accept requests to change filaments.
  • Print anything that violates our guidelines.

The UAB Libraries currently offers two types of 3D printers. We have printers that use filaments and printers that use resins. Filament printers are in both Lister Hill Library as well as in Sterne Library. Resin printers are only available at Lister Hill Library.

We require users to complete instructional modules to use the printers in the UAB Libraries. There are two separate modules: one for filament printers and another for the resin printers. The appropriate module and guidelines must be successfully completed before access is granted. Please see our events calendar, below, for upcoming workshop dates and times.

There are limits to the items that can be printed in the UAB Libraries. We allow users to print five items each month. The print time on all submissions must be less than 10 hours. If a project that informs teaching or research will require more submissions or longer print times, please contact the Technology Labs Manager. Requests for exceptions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
