This panel discusses the most talked-about Latinx-themed movie of 2021. Director John M. Chu’s adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway smash In the Heights (2005) continues the tradition begun in film by West Side Story (1961) of highlighting a Latinx Barrio of Manhattan, but focusing on Dominican-Americans. Before its release, though, it already created controversy by apparently excluding Afro-Latinx people. The ensuing debate reveals the complexity of race, identity, and history in the Caribbean and the United States. |

He will relate it to the realities of the Birmingham community. Hernández will speak about this population from her experience as a Latinx in Alabama and the director of AIDS Alabama, which serves many Latinxs in Central Alabama.
