According to the Pew Research Center, the Hispanic/Latino population in portions of Alabama continues to grow. This guide will help you locate information about this demographic group while highlighting some Hispanic assistance resources.
The U.S. Census defines Hispanic or Latino origin as people who classify themselves as “the heritage, nationality, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person’s parents or ancestors before arriving in the United States. People who identify as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish may be any race."
Pew Research Center uses the terms "Hispanic" and "Latino" interchangeably. I will use both in this guide, but I will replace "Latino" with "LatinX" to illustrate the evolving nature of gender.
For more information on using the terms "Hispanic" and "Latino," see "When Labels Don't Fit: Hispanics and Their Views of Identity" and "Hispanic Identity Fades across Generations as Immigrant Connections Fall Away," both from the Pew Research Center.
