The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association, established this award in 2010 to recognize "the best nonfiction book published for young adults (ages 12-18)." Books are judged on writing, research, presentation, and readability. It is one of the few awards that recognizes nonfiction written for young adults. Each year's committee, consisting of 10 members of YALSA, chooses one winner and four honor books.
