The Alabama School Library Association created the Yellowhammer Book Awards in 2020 to highlight young adult literature titles with literary merit, instructional application, and teen appeal. Nominees can be fiction, nonfiction, prose, verse, and/or graphic novels.
In 2021, the award expanded to include middle grade titles. In 2024, the committee created three distinct age categories, choosing one winner and 2-3 honor books for elementary, middle grade, and young adult.
The award winners are selected by a committee of Alabama school librarians.
