Course guide for FLL 485 Capstone

Types of Art-Related Books

  • Monographs* – separate treatises on a particular subject, typically written expositions of a subject narrow enough in scope to exclude all but a single aspect of the subject, for example, a study of the works of a single artist
  • Edited collections – books with essays written by multiple authors around a common artist or theme
  • Catalogues raisonnés* – complete, systematic, and critical listings of all the known works of a single artist, providing comprehensive information, including provenance, for each work (Catalogues Raisonnés Database)
  • Ouevre catalogs – similar to catalogue raisonnés, but without documentation and provenance
  • Museum catalogs – catalogs of a museum’s permanent collection
  • Exhibition catalogs* – publications that document the works displayed in an exhibition
  • Reference books*– books intended primarily for consultation rather than for consecutive reading (e.g., encyclopedias, dictionaries, and bibliographies)
