CECM 676: Construction Project Risk Management Browsing & Searching ACSE Journals

Browsing & Searching ACSE Journals

Journals published by the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) are a good source of current research in construction.  Among their journals are Journal of Composites for Construction, Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, Journal of Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution in Engineering and Construction, Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, and Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction.  There are other journals on sub-disciplines of civil engineering that may deal with construction-related topics.  Here’s how to get to them.

Begin by clicking the ASCE Library - Journals link on the Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering databases page.  [Note: If you are using the ASCE journals off-campus, after you click the link you will be prompted to enter your BlazerID and password before you can access the database.]

Browsing

On the ASCE Library - Journals home page, scroll through the title list until you find the journal you're looking for and click the title.

On the journal home page, you can look at (1) recently added articles, (2) the current issue, and (3) previous available issues.

On the main page for each issue you will see a table of contents and a drop down that will allow you to select the type of article you're interested in.  For example, we can choose to look at the technical papers from this issue.

When we find an article we're interested in exploring, we can click the name of that article. The "Full Access" label lets you know that we have access to the full text through the UAB Libraries subscription!

You can read the article online (HTML) or download a copy using the red PDF button to the right below the article's title and authors.

Searching

You can also search for topics across all the ASCE journals. Using the search box at the top of the ASCE Library webpage will allow you to do a basic search for terms as well as choosing to perform an advanced search or a citation search.

Type your topic in the search box and click the Search button. Let's do a search for "risk management." Using the parentheses will make sure that our results all have those two words next to one another in the results.

Your results list will include items from all ASCE publications (book chapters, conference papers, etc.). Under the "Article Type" heading in the sidebar on the left, you can select Technical Paper, Case Study, or many other options that will limit your results list that type of journal article, respectively. Further down the sidebar, you can also find a place to narrow your results by publication date.

If you find any items of interest that we don't have "Full Access" to, you can request copies through our interlibrary loan service.

To read an article online (HTML) or download a copy (PDF), click the article title, as you did when browsing.
