The UAB site-wide Notebook

The UAB site-wide notebook includes UAB resources on research data related services. It has tips for data managment and sharing as well as templates and tools to help you use LabArchives effectively.

How to find the site-wide notebook

When users log in the left-side nagivation will look like this:

In order to find the UAB Sitewide Notebook, click “Notebooks >” in the top left of the navigation bar on the left side of the page. The UAB Sitewide Notebook will be visible in the left-side navigation bar along with any other notebooks you have access to.

Clicking the UAB Sitewide Notebook will take you to that notebook in the brower window.

Create a Notebook

Once you log in you can create a new notebook by clicking on the plus (+) button in the top left corner. Anyone can make a notebook but the ownership MUST be transferred to the PI of the research group in order to avoid losing the data when lab members leave the group.

To transfer a notebook, go into the accounts manager setting (dropdown menu when you click on your name in the upper right hand part of the page) and assign an “account” or “notebook” roles to members in the research group to delegate notebook setup and management responsibilities once the notebooks are created.

Notebook roles

Role Access/permissions Who
Owner Full access, can sign (lock) entries, delete entries PI
Administrator Acts as proxy for owner Lab manager / Sr. researcher
User Edit access, cannot delete or sign Lab members
Guest View access only Guests, short-term students

Organize a Notebook

Notebooks should be organized in a logical way with a system of folders and pages. Typically this falls into two categories, separate notebooks organized by project or by person. Choose the structure that works best for your team and your discipline

  • To create a new folder or page, click "+ New" in the Notebook navigator. (all folders and pages can be moved using drag and drop.)
  • Right click on the folder or page name for options to rename or delete the item.
  • Subfolders can also be created within the folder structure for even better organization.

It may also be useful to have a Lab-wide notebook filled with policies, standard protocols and other lab managment documentation
