Resources and books for the ABA Basic & Advanced Exam and the ITE

Preparing for the Anesthesiology Boards

During your Anesthesiology Residency you will prepare for and take several exams from the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). These exams can be divided into two categories:

  1. In-Training Exams (ITE): an annual exam administered each February of your residency, meant to act as a marker of your academic progress
  2. ABA Board Exams: a staged exam resulting in board certification. The Basic Exam is taken spring of the CA1 year, with Advanced and Applied Exams are taken after completion of the residency.

While it's important to prepare for the ITE, this should not take precedence over studying for the ABA Board Exams as these determine your ability to practice as an anesthesiologist. The content and format of the ABA Basic and Advanced Exams differs from that of the ITE and your preparation should account for this.

The UAB Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine provides a number of books and resources to help you prepare for these exams. Numerous other resources are also available for purchase using personal development account funds.

On this site, you'll find information on preparing for the following exams and using certain resources:
