Definition of Evidence-Based Dentistry

Here's how the American Dental Association defines Evidence-Based Dentistry:

"Evidence-based dentistry (EBD) is an approach to oral health care that requires the judicious integration of systematic assessments of clinically relevant scientific evidence, relating to the patient's oral and medical condition and history, with the dentist's clinical expertise and the patient's treatment needs and preferences."

EBD integrates:

  • the best available evidence
  • clinical experience
  • patient preference

Why is this needed?

  • Dental research is constant.
  • Implementation of findings is delayed.
  • Dentists must stay current.
  • Evidence-based practice has been shown to keep dentists up-to-date.
