Getting Started: Finding Scholarly Articles: Choosing database(s)

Choosing and Using Databases

Using databases to find articles

Lister Hill Library has both online journals and an extensive print journal collection.  Some print journals in the collection are over 100 years old!  Currently, we purchase e-journals, not print.  Use the library catalog or e-journal list to see if the library has the journal you need online or in print at the library.

To find journal articles, use a database to search by subject, or author. The list of all LHL resources is found on the Databases page. See the demonstration in the box below.

Smartphone Users: Many library databases and resources now have mobile websites.  See the list here.  Click on the Mobile link in the "Access Information" column to get instructions for each.

Some useful databases for biomedical research include:

  • CINAHL    (nursing and allied health)
  • Embase  (biomedical)
  • PubMed    (biomedical)
  • PyscINFO   (behavioral sciences and mental health)
  • Google Scholar  (full text search  of scholarly articles; articles MAY NOT be peer-reviewed)
  • Scopus (biomedical, science, social sciences)

Other databases:

  • Databases (sort by subject; useful for interdisciplinary research)
