The Early Years (1865-1867)

William Osler was born in Bond Head, Ontario on July 12, 1849 to Featherstone and Ellen Osler.  He grew up in Dundas, Ontario and started at Barrie Grammar School in 1864, where he met his life-long friend, Edward (Ned) Milburn. After Barrie, Osler enrolled in the college preparatory school, Weston, where he first became interested in science. Under the direction of Dr. James Bovell, a physician and a naturalist, Osler gained experience in zoology and in medicine while at Weston.

Osler later lived with Dr. Bovell, and studied under him when he was accepted to the Toronto School of Medicine in October 1868. Osler's time at Trinity College proved to be essential as it convinced him that medicine was his true calling.
