EndNote (Desktop Version): Find Reference Updates

Find Reference Updates Feature

Sometimes you may notice that references in your library lack key pieces of information, like volume or issue number or page numbers. This is often the case with e-publications that are indexed in databases ahead of when they are actually published (aka "Epubs ahead of print"). If you notice this problem, the Find Reference Updates feature is very handy.

Another reason you might use this feature is if you are an NIH-funded researcher and need to add PMCID or NIHMSID numbers to your existing references.

Here is how to use this feature:

1) Click on the incomplete reference(s) to highlight them

2) Go to References Find Reference Updates. EndNote will search for additional information about the reference(s) and let you know what (if any) other details it found.

If EndNote found additional details, you will see a screen like this, showing which new information it found. You have the option to Update Empty Fields, Update All Fields, or you can manually copy/paste updated information field by field.
