Custom Group

Custom groups are manually created by the user to organize references in the library.

The maximum number of custom and smart groups is 5,000 per library.

Group Membership

References may belong to multiple groups.

References that do not belong to a group are in the unfiled group.

Rename / Delete Custom Group

Custom groups may be renamed or deleted by displaying the groups menu or right or control clicking on the name.

References in a deleted custom group remain in the other groups or go into the unfiled group.

Highlight References

One Reference

Click once on the reference to highlight it.

Multiple References

Select one reference and press and hold down the Ctrl or Command key then click on each additional reference.

Consecutive References

Select first reference and press and hold down the Shift key then click on last reference.

Select one reference and press Ctrl + A or Command + A on the keyboard or display the edit menu and select all.

Creating a Custom Group

1. In EndNote, go to Groups > Create Group.

2. On the left under My Groups, enter a name for the group. Click anywhere outside of the box to save the new group.

Adding References to a Custom Group

1. Select All References (or Imported References, Recently Added, or Unfiled) on the left.

2. Click and highlight the references to add to the custom group.

3. Drag and drop the references onto the group name.

Go to Groups > Add References To and select the name of the group or create a new custom group.

Removing References from a Custom Group

1. Click and highlight the references to remove from the custom group.

2. Press Delete on the keyboard and confirm removal.

Right click on the references and select Remove References from Group and confirm removal.
