One of the most useful features in EndNote is Cite While You Write (CWYW). CWYW allows EndNote users to access EndNote from within Word and add citations at any time. CWYW builds a reference list automatically as citations are added, and can also be used to manage citation numbering and change citation styles within a document.
There are two ways to add citations to a document using this tool. Users can access an EndNote library through the Insert Citation function in Word, and then use a keyword search to find references in the EndNote library that they would like to cite in a document. Users can also use the Insert Selected Citation(s) function to select citations in an EndNote library and add citations for the selected references to a Word document.
The screenshots on this page of the EndNote guide show the process for using both the Insert Citation and Insert Selected Citation(s) function.
Inserting citations using the Insert Citation function.
1. Place the cursor in the place in the document text where the citation is needed.
2. Click the Insert Citation button in the EndNote X8 ribbon in Word.
3. Select the Insert Citation function. This will open a new window that supports keyword searching of an EndNote library.
4. Use the keyword search to find a reference in an EndNote library. Author names and words in an article title are examples of keywords that can be used to search an EndNote library. Click the reference to be inserted to select it. Once the correct references are selected, click the Insert button at the bottom of the window. This will add a citation for the selected references in the Word document where the cursor is located.
5. A citation for the select reference has been added to the document text. A corresponding reference was placed at the end of the document.
Inserting citations using the Insert Selected Citation(s) function.
1. Open an EndNote library. Click the reference in the library to be cited in the Word document to select it. To select more than one reference at a time, press and hold the CTRL button on the keyboard while selecting references.
2. Go to the Word document and place the cursor in the location in the text where the citations should be added. Click the Insert Citation button on the EndNote ribbon in Word. Click Insert Selected Citation(s).
3. Citations will now be present in the document and corresponding entries will be present in the reference list at the end of the document.
