The Find Duplicates feature in EndNote compares reference entries that the program detects as similar and provides a window that enables a side-by-side comparison of duplicated references. Users can choose to skip removing a duplicate, or can compare records and whichever they prefer to keep in the database, while sending the other to the trash. Duplicate records sent to the trash will remain in that location until the trash is emptied.
EndNote may incorrectly detect duplicates if the DOI, PMID, or other identifiers are not present in a reference entry. To collect updated reference information for your library before running a duplicate check, use the Check for Updates function before using the Find Duplicates function.
Using the Find Duplicates function in EndNote
1. Duplicate references may be imported into a library if duplicates are not discarded during importing, or if the online search is used to add the same reference for than one time.
2. Go to the References menu and click Find Duplicates.
3. EndNote will open a new wizard that will provide a side-by-side comparison of references it has detected as duplicates. Users can compare records and select the record they would like to keep. When choosing Keep This Record, the record that is not selected is sent to the Trash in the library. It will remain in the Trash until the Trash is emptied. Users can also choose to skip the reference and retain both duplicates in the library.
